Ferrari Australasia chose the Inglis Newmarket Stables in Randwick for the official debut of the Ferrari 488 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta), its first appearance in Australia following the car’s International Premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March. An impressive vintage line up of 40 years of Ferrari V8’s showcased the 488 GTB’s iconic bloodline as the vehicle made a triumphant entrance to cheers from the crowd.
A new prancing horse has officially been welcomed to Australian shores with the exciting Ferrari 488 GTB breaking cover in Sydney amongst a stable of thoroughbred race horses. The fitting proceedings was presented by the CEO of Ferrari Australasia, Herbert Appleroth, who discussed his sheer enthusiasm for the stunning new Maranello steed. “We have been overwhelmed by the response to our new 488 GTB unveiled today for the first time in Australasia,” he said.
“The demand for the 488 GTB is at record levels even before a customer has had the chance to see her. The waiting list now stretches beyond 2 years and no doubt the 488 GTB will go down in history as an all time great.” The 488 GTB inherits much of its DNA from the exclusive $2M LaFerrari hypercar and features a host of drastic performance upgrades over its predecessor, the 458 Italia. It’s more than 80% new in the design department and rocks a brand new 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8.
The new power plant pumps out a massive 492kW of power and 760Nm of torque to the rear in fact. All at a stratospheric 8,000rpm, which is not bad for a turbo car, will see it max out at 330km/h with a claimed 0-100km/h time of three seconds. The prancing horse is spruiking that the new car will also provide track levels of performance for non-professional and everyday drivers, ensuring rapid response times, nimbleness and an on-the-limit driving experience.
In the aerodynamics department the car receives 50% more downforce compared to the 458 – a much desired requisite given the insane 330km/h top speed and 0-100km/h sprint time of three seconds. For the infotainment junkies, there’s also a new system with built-in telemetry that maps out the racetrack you’re on no matter where in the world you’ve shipped the car. The 488 GTB is the new Ferrari fighter that takes the reigns from the outgoing 458 Italia. Externally, the body modifications appear to be a minor upgrade from the 458 with larger air intakes, but there’s actually a new heart lurking under those gorgeous Italian curves.
