The mercury may have topped 35C, however the action at Summernats was even hotter!
Canberra’s annual Street Machine Summernats car festival is hands down the biggest motoring enthusiast event in the country. And with Summernats 28 attracting a record 1907 entrants and an astounding 108,569 spectators, it’s big even by world standards. What makes Summernats so iconic is its shear unadulterated energy. There’s an intensity and buzz in the air; it’s like the first 200 meters of a Formula 1 race, except it lasts for four solid days! Jam packed into that time is the big city cruise, Exhibition Park cruising, show ’n’ shine, burnout competitions, driving skill challenges, horsepower dyno shootout, Miss Summernats pageant, airbrush exhibitions, esky, crazy hat and kids competitions, a tattoo comp, seminars, world-class live bands, a Sound-Off, fireworks and over 100 traders – phew! Summernats is simply colossal; it’s like four or five mega shows all rolled into one.
As frenetic as Summernats is, it’s very much a family-orientated event these days. Organisers have gone to great lengths to make it inviting for women and kids alike. This has the knock-on effect of attracting big spenders, with the event injecting tens of millions of dollars into the local community. As Summernats traders will attest, Summernats spectators not only spend big, they’re savvy and conscientious consumers. They know their stuff. Being all about the motoring enthusiast, MotorActive is heavily involved in all the major Summernats drawcards. The Meguiar’s Pavilion hosts two days of judging of the major show cars, the Top 60 Finalist Show, Meguiar’s MotorEx Superstars qualifying, the Meguiar’s Great Uncover, Meguiar’s People’s Choice and the Car Audio Sound-Off on Sunday. The hugely the successful Guinness World Record Burnout (see Power Pit World Record, below) – along with qualification, elimination and finals for the Liqui-Moly Burnout Championship and the Liqui-Moly Burnout Masters – all take place in the Liqui-Moly Power Pit. In short, MotorActive’s two premier brands, Meguiar’s and Liqui-Moly, are all over Summernats.
THAT’S an official world record you’re looking at!At the Liqui-Moly Power Pit, representatives from the Guinness Book of Records verified that Summernats achieved 103 power junkies simultaneously performing a burnout – a new official world record. While the smoke plume was overwhelming, generating incredible images and video footage that received world-wide coverage, there was also the roar of 103 tough-as-nails engines all hammering away simultaneously. This incredible aural experience exhilarated the senses, eclipsing the visual spectacle.
